An ex-boyfriend of mine believed that you could taste the sentiment in which food and drink had been prepared in the final product. Needless to say everything I prepared tasted wonderful, although he never sampled anything after we broke up ;) I am not sure if I have the same belief, just think of all those angry chefs! However, often I see the term ‘made with love’ from artisans that hand make their products, and in general this is well accepted as a benefit for the customer.
Undoubtedly, hand-crafted products have many pleasing characteristics as a result of the way they are made; high quality, customisation and individuality to name just a few. Additionally, if you believe that the sentiment in which something is made translates into enjoyment of the final product then ‘made with love’ has a benefit for the customer. In my experience the term ‘made with love’ is actually a benefit for the maker, I make jewellery in different contexts; events, samples as well as for customer orders. I don’t know if there is a visible difference between the products I make in each situation, certainly not to my eye. What is markedly different though is how I feel whilst making.
I enjoy making in any context, there is a lot of pleasure I derive from crafting unique jewellery with my hands. However, when I am making for a customer, even if I don’t know the person, there is something special about making for that person’s pleasure. I consider how they will receive their jewellery, open up the packaging to discover the contents and finally either wear or maybe give as a gift to a loved one. During making I am imagining how the end recipient will feel wearing their jewellery and how it will be part of the story of their life. It feels wonderful to make something while your mind is occupied with these thoughts, if that translates into the end product then even better!
It is fair to say when someone places an order with me, their jewellery is made with love, and even if I am the only person who feels the emotion of that, it is still more love in this world. So I say thank-you to everyone that orders from Snowflake Designs, not only for appreciating my work and contributing to my business but for bringing more love into my life!
